Explore 50 years of Weston Favell Shopping centre at their exhibition
Here for you since 1974, Weston Favell Shopping centre is 50 years old! Explore the Past, Present and Future of this community shopping hub and the surrounding Eastern District at the '50 years of Favell' Exhibition.
An immersive exhibition, funded by Arts Council England and Northampton Town Council, celebrating the past, present, and future of Weston Favell Shopping Centre, featuring a unique photography project, interviews with local residents, an original audio trilogy, and a curated collection of centre archive photos and memories supported by The Chronicle and Echo, Barclays Bank, Tesco and Growing Together.
The exhibition, located on the Upper Mall outside Deichmann from until Saturday 30th November, is a collaborative effort bringing together the creative talents of 60 Miles by Road or Rail, RYG Films, Christian Sinibaldi and Subika Anwar-Khan, with contributions from the Silhouette Youth Theatre.
Visitors will be treated to a rich visual experience through a series of powerful photographs by Christian Sinibaldi, capturing the essence of the shopping centre over the decades. Complementing this visual journey are insightful interviews with local people, conducted by RYG Films, that reveal personal stories and memories connected to Weston Favell.
This is enhanced with an original audio trilogy from local artist Subika Anwar-Khan, charting three generations of centre regulars. A key feature of the exhibition is an engaging installation that invites visitors to reflect on the centre's evolution. This exhibition is more than just a look back; it's a tribute to the enduring spirit of Weston Favell Shopping centre and its role in the community.
Andy Routledge, Artistic Director of 60 Miles by Road or Rail, said: "We have loved partnering with Weston Favell Shopping centre to celebrate their 50th birthday celebrations. From capturing photographs of the many people who engage with the centre today, to hearing people share their fond memories of the centre as a constant through their lives, it has been incredibly powerful to capture just how much Weston Favell Shopping centre means to so many. The centre continues to thrive after 50 years due to the dedication and care it has for its many communities."
Cllr Keith Holland-Delamere, Deputy Chair of the Community Services Committee at Northampton Town Council, said: "Having grown up and lived on the east of Northampton East all my life, I have many good memories of Weston Favell Centre. "It is a valuable community hub for our district and Northampton Town Council is happy to have contributed grant funding to support its 50th Anniversary celebrations."
Silhouette Youth Theatre will be bringing the exhibition to an end with several verbatim theatre performances in their unit next door to The Works. You can get tickets for these shows here.
A free 'Big Birthday Bash' party will be held at the shopping centre on Tuesday, 29th October, 11am - 3pm as part of the anniversary celebrations, with karaoke, Silent Disco, face paints and special guests, The Wombles, making a celebrity appearance!
